AI and Game Design, A Possible Solution to A Boring Industry
Many industries are being shaped by the integration of AI technologies, and game design is no exception. As AI continues to evolve, it offers new tools and methodologies. These new tools can directly operate on code, such as Cybever AI |(which automates world generation and design), or Ludas AI which not only refines the developer's code but is integrating directly into the development environment. This allows the AI agent with a degree of context, operating on a piece of code while considering what is already in the IDE (i.e. variables, api's, functions, etc).
For the game industry, this allows novice developers to quickly generate and learning code. Of course for expert developers, just like any other domains (particularly those that are artistic in nature), the AI models currently in place seldomly replicate expert-level quality. For the industry, this potentialy could result in a flood of indie games (games created by small teams or businesses). I have criticized the game industry for close to a decade for driving game development through a business model. The best games in my opion, are guided by story, novel experiences, and artistic creativity; consider your first time playing Mario or entering some other exciting virtual world. With AI empowering developers to leverage modern game-design technology, the art of game writing and design becomes much more accessible where a prior efforts were often overshadowed by large studios with double or triple A level funding. Hopefully, the art will return to game design.
